This one is for the Birds.

Squaw Creek is this wildlife refuge just north of St. Joseph, MO. More aptly, it is a bird refuge.

We grabbed Eric's bird watching, knows damn near everything about nature, best friend and headed out there this past weekend. I think it is always good to go with someone like that. It's good for me anyway. If there is a question, then there is actually an instant response. If I have to save a question until I get home, I will forget it. :(.

I should let you all know that this is not one of my favorite places. I planned it because my hubby likes birds. I was probably the only one of the 3 of us who was glad that we went on such a cold day. The wetlands were all frozen over and looked very much like an artic tundra. There were lots of muted colors, in the ice, in the dead vegetation, in the clouds.

For those of you who are bird lovers, we saw hawks, lots of hawks. Around our house we see red-tails mostly. But, in Squaw Creek there were loads of different hawks. The first few that I saw in trees seemed really unnatural to me. We usually see them on utility poles and signs. Seeing them in trees really gives new dimension to how big they are.

If, by happy chance you are familiar with this area, no, we did not see any eagles. It was too cold for the eagles who apparently will follow the snow geese. So, if you are looking for eagles, follow snow geese. Or, apparently you can count kestrals. I think the rule is if you see 3 or more on the way it will be a good day for eagles.

See I did learn stuff. I can't say that I have a new appreciation for birds, I don't. Any time I can learn something knew and see beauty in the world around me, it has been a good day. Saturday was a very good day.
